- Thorough visual and tactile exam
- Xrays
- Prescribe antibiotics - if you have an infection, certain medical conditions or the surgery is expected be long
- Ask you to not smoke
- In certain situations ask you to arrange transportation
- Simple extraction - this is the most common tooth removal and is used for teeth you can see
- Surgical extraction - this is more complex and is generally for teeth that are broken off below the gum or those which haven't erupted yet
- Impacted Wisdom teeth
- A broken or decayed tooth that can't be saved
- More room is needed for braces or other orthodontics
- Baby teeth or other teeth that don't fall out or crowd others from growing in properly
- Other medical reasons
Wisdom Teeth Removal Aftercare
Your doctor will provide specific aftercare instructions. Here is what you can expect:
- Ice packs and/or warm compresses to reduce swelling and pain
- Eat soft and cool foods for a few days, trying other food as you feel comfortable.
- Gently rinse with warm salt water
- Expect any swelling and bleeding to end within a day or two after the surgery
- You should not smoke, use a straw or spit after surgery because these can pull the blood clot out of the hole where the tooth was
